A pattern can change its material and its job. In Henry Holland × Harlequin’s collection, ceramic motifs move into fabrics and wallpaper. We’re revisiting a project covered by Wallpaper* on 5 August 2024, rather than announcing a new launch.
The studio connects the designs to nerikomi, a technique using layers of coloured clay. What interests us is the transfer between surfaces. On a small object, the eye follows a curve; on a wall, it reads an expansive field. Simply enlarging the image won’t do: scale, density and relationships with surrounding objects need fresh decisions.
That transfer makes a useful test for your own graphics. Can they handle a different size and viewing distance? What survives when the texture changes? A good answer is usually more interesting than an Apply Pattern button. And considerably cheaper than renovating a room because of one very persuasive mock-up.
