Gretchen Scherer’s In Time opened at Monya Rowe Gallery on 29 October. The artist reimagines historical interiors, combining real places with invention. The New York exhibition runs until 9 January 2027.
The images invite you to study the spaces between paintings as much as the paintings themselves. One frame argues with its neighbour; a small work holds its own beside a large one; perspective draws the eye deeper inside. For a graphic designer, it’s almost an exercise in dense page layout, with rooms in place of columns.
It’s useful to relax the habitual demand to declutter everything. Visual abundance can be a deliberate choice: the question is where it takes the eye and where it lets it rest. Removing half the objects would be easy. Keeping us curious about the remaining half is harder. The link leads to the gallery’s notes; pictures are available under Exhibition Images on its website.
