SFMOMA opened New Work: Raven Chacon on 24 October. Its seven-channel video installation The Naming of Names brings archival footage together with the artist’s sound.

We’re interested in a question beautiful images can make us forget: whose view is this? A camera doesn’t become neutral just because it points at mountains. Framing, distance and editing already suggest how to understand a place.

That question travels well beyond a museum. What story does your chosen image produce? What stays outside the frame? Sometimes changing the viewpoint is more useful than adjusting the contrast for the fifth time. Though we do understand the attachment to contrast.
