Colossal featured GaHee Park’s Soft Shell on 2 November. The exhibition at Jessica Silverman in San Francisco opened on 28 October and runs through 19 December. Figures, still lifes and landscapes flow into one another in the artist’s paintings.

The first impression can feel thoroughly domestic: a table, dishes, fabric. Then a small displacement unsettles our confidence in what we see. It’s an interesting way to direct attention: rather than make the whole image shout, leave a detail that brings the eye back.

For visual storytelling, that second look can matter more than instant impact. Viewers recognise the familiar before beginning to doubt it. The gallery’s page offers works and commentary. Still, you may want to look again at your vase at home. Just in case.
