In a creator-submitted Designboom feature dated 2 November, Jan-Micha Gamer presents Raw Material: Armchair. According to the project description, one discarded chair’s materials became nine domestic objects, including baskets, a lamp and a table.
The order of work changes. First establish what’s already available: the size of a leather piece, the condition of timber, a spring’s geometry. Then find a form suited to that stock. The material gets to argue with the sketch, and this looks like a productive interview.
The useful shift is to see disassembly as a design operation. Rather than simply destroy an old object, preserve its parts’ future possibilities. This remains an author’s study, not proof that every armchair can be waste-free. But it changes how bulky rubbish looks: sometimes one function has ended, not the whole resource. Best not to begin with a chainsaw and optimism.
