A nice binding usually encourages careful handling. Carolina Incerti’s A Book for Making Books asks you to tear, cut, fold and assemble. Its eight physical templates teach book and zine making through the act of making them.
The publication grew out of her Open Books master’s research at Bergen’s art academy. A book club offered somewhere to experiment together; existing guides often proved either too complicated or too short on practical help. The club tested and improved the templates that became the book.
Primary colours and a playful approach draw on playgrounds, where trying something feels more natural than worrying about spoiling it. It is a good turn for design education: material you are allowed to touch, rather than another promise of a perfect outcome. A crooked fold becomes something learned, not a reason to close the file without saving.
